Marangu Route 6 Days
The recommended Marangu experience. An extra acclimatization day at Horombo Huts (3,705m) makes a significant difference to your summit success — while still enjoying the comfort of hut accommodation throughout the climb.
Marangu with an Extra Rest Day
The 6-day Marangu adds one crucial rest day at Horombo Huts (3,705m) — transforming a rushed 5-day ascent into a properly paced, more comfortable climb. The acclimatization hike toward Mawenzi peak in the afternoon keeps your body adjusting without overloading it.
Like the 5-day, this route features hut accommodation throughout — bunk beds with foam mattresses, mess halls for dining, and running (cold) water at most huts. For climbers who prefer a roof over their head to a tent, the Marangu remains the only option on Kilimanjaro.
The summit day is identical to the 5-day version — a midnight departure from Kibo Hut, climbing via Hans Meyer Cave and Gillman's Point to Uhuru Peak — but with meaningfully better acclimatization behind you.
Day-by-Day Breakdown
Drive 1.5 hours from Arusha through Marangu village to the national park gate. After registration, the trail enters the rainforest on a well-maintained path — moss-covered trees, bird calls, and the occasional rustle of colobus monkeys in the canopy above. The route follows a cleared ridge trail or the optional scenic forest path. Each hut features 6–8 sleeping bunks with solar-generated lighting — simple, clean, and perfectly adequate for mountain accommodation.
Pass Maundi Crater and watch the vegetation transition from forest to open moorland. Giant lobelia plants (up to 3m) and giant groundsel (up to 5m) are unique to this altitude — extraordinary prehistoric forms found nowhere else on Earth. Kibo's glaciers come into view above. Horombo Hut complex is the busiest and most atmospheric overnight on the route — normally full of climbers in various stages of ascent and descent, with a wonderful shared sense of purpose and adventure.
This is the key day that separates the 6-day from the 5-day Marangu. All meals are provided at Horombo, and the day is yours to rest and recover. However, the best use of acclimatization is an active one: an optional 3-hour guided hike toward Mawenzi Hut (4,330m), past the striking Zebra Rocks formation. This higher-altitude walk — sleeping lower upon return — is the "climb high, sleep low" principle in action. Horombo is normally buzzing with hikers and porters — an atmosphere of adventure, laughter, and anticipation.
Two route options — the recommended lower route passes the last water point at 4,130m. The upper saddle route is longer and more exposed. Both converge before Kibo Hut, a solid stone block building with bunk beds for 60 climbers. The landscape here is completely barren — nothing grows above ~4,400m on Kilimanjaro's windward side. Mineral water and soft drinks are sold at Kibo Hut. Early dinner, then sleep — the summit alarm sounds at 11:30 PM.
Summit night begins at 23:30 with tea and biscuits. The route crosses rocky terrain to Hans Meyer Cave (5,150m), then zigzags steeply up loose scree to Gillman's Point (5,681m) on the crater rim. This is probably the most demanding section of the entire route — very steep, with a lot of stone scree, requiring significant physical and mental effort. Snow typically covers the final stretch around the rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895m). After the summit, descend via the same route to Kibo Hut, rest briefly, then continue to Horombo for the final night on the mountain.
Descend from Horombo through Mandara hut and back through the forest to Marangu Gate. The descent retraces the approach exactly — the familiar landscape now feels welcoming and warm. At the gate, receive your summit certificate — green for Gillman's Point, gold for Uhuru Peak. Transfer back to Arusha or Moshi for your celebration meal and a well-deserved rest.
