The Original Kilimanjaro Route

The Marangu Route is the original Kilimanjaro climbing trail, opened for guided ascents in the 1890s. It's nicknamed the "Coca-Cola Route" — sometimes because of its relative accessibility, sometimes because refreshments are actually sold at the mountain huts. It is the only route on Kilimanjaro with permanent hut accommodation at each overnight stop.

The huts have bunk beds with foam mattresses, solar-powered lighting, and dining areas — a significant comfort advantage for climbers who prefer not to camp. The route follows a single trail both up and down, passing through forest, moorland, and alpine desert to Kibo Hut before the midnight summit push.

We strongly recommend the 6-day Marangu for an extra acclimatization day at Horombo — the single biggest improvement to your summit chances on this route.

Day-by-Day Breakdown

1
Marangu Gate → Mandara HutsMontane Forest
1,905m → 2,723m8.3 km4–5 hrs
Altitude gain: 818m 4–5 hours hiking 8.3 km

After registration and porter weight checks at Marangu Gate, the trail enters Kilimanjaro's magnificent montane rainforest. A stop at Kisamboni picnic site for lunch, then onward through the forest past waterfalls and streams to Mandara Huts. The huts have 6–8 bunk beds per cottage with solar lighting — the first of three hut complexes on this route. A gentle first day that eases climbers into the mountain atmosphere.

2
Mandara Huts → Horombo HutsForest → Moorland
2,723m → 3,721m11 km6 hrs
Altitude gain: 998m 6 hours hiking 11 km

The forest thins and gives way to open moorland. Giant groundsel and lobelia plants appear — extraordinary prehistoric-looking organisms adapted to extreme altitude fluctuations. The first views of snow-capped Kibo and the jagged Mawenzi appear above. Horombo Huts at 3,721m is one of the busiest camp complexes on the mountain — normally bustling with guides and porters in a wonderful atmosphere of excitement and anticipation. Hot drinks and popcorn are served upon arrival.

3
Horombo Huts → Kibo HutMoorland → Alpine
3,721m → 4,720m9 km6 hrs
Altitude gain: 993m 6 hours hiking 9 km

The vegetation disappears entirely as the trail climbs across desolate volcanic scree slopes. This section can feel harsh — the lack of oxygen becomes apparent, and the pace slows. Pass the last water point at 4,200m before reaching Kibo Hut, a stone block structure that sleeps 60 climbers in bunk beds. An afternoon rest is mandatory — eat lightly, drink plenty of water, and aim to sleep by 6pm ahead of the midnight wake-up call.

4
Kibo Hut → Uhuru Peak → Horombo HutsArctic Summit
4,720m → 5,895m → 3,721m21 km~14 hrs
Summit: 5,895m ~14 hours total 21 km total

Summit night — the longest and hardest day. Around midnight, the ascent begins. Past Hans Meyer Cave (5,259m), the trail zigzags steeply toward Gilman's Point (5,719m) on the crater rim — reached after approximately 5–6 hours. From here, a further 1–2 hours around the crater rim leads to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) — the highest point in Africa. After photographs and the summit sign, begin the descent back to Kibo Hut, then continue all the way down to Horombo for the night. A very tough but deeply rewarding day — a true test of endurance.

5
Horombo Huts → Marangu GateMoorland & Forest
3,721m → 1,905m20 km7 hrs
Altitude loss: 1,816m 7 hours hiking 20 km

Final descent through moorland back into the beautiful montane rainforest. Passing Mandara Huts for a last rest stop, the trail returns to Marangu Gate where a celebratory lunch is provided. Receive your summit certificate — gold for Uhuru Peak, green for Gilman's Point — and transfer back to your hotel in Arusha or Moshi for a shower and celebration dinner. The optional next day can include a hot springs visit, souvenir shopping, or preparation for an onward safari.
