Machame Route 7 Days
The recommended Machame option. One extra acclimatization day at Karanga Camp makes a measurable difference to your summit success — giving your body crucial time to adjust before the final push to Uhuru Peak.
Machame with an Extra Day
The 7-day Machame is our most recommended Kilimanjaro climb for fit, motivated trekkers. It follows the same dramatic route as the 6-day option — rainforest, Shira Plateau, Lava Tower, Barranco Wall — but adds an overnight at Karanga Camp before ascending to Barafu Base Camp.
That extra day at Karanga (4,035m) is not just rest — it is active acclimatization. Your body is given more time to produce additional red blood cells and adjust to the reduced oxygen. Studies consistently show this extra day increases summit success rates by 10–15% compared to the 6-day option.
The 7-day Machame is the sweet spot: the drama of the Machame Route with acclimatization approaching the Lemosho standard, while keeping the itinerary efficient.
Day-by-Day Breakdown
The drive from Arusha to Kilimanjaro National Park Gate takes about 1.5 hours. After registration, the trail enters a winding ridge path through the famous Kilimanjaro rainforest — mossy, muddy in places, and alive with bird calls. Gaiters and trekking poles are essential from the first steps. The gradient is steady, and by afternoon, the canopy gives way to the camp clearing.
Leave the rainforest and cross a valley before ascending a steep rocky ridge covered in heather. The transition from forest to moorland happens quickly — the vegetation thins and the sky opens. Continue westward along a river gorge to the Shira campsite at the edge of the ancient plateau. On clear days, Mount Meru floats above the clouds to the southwest.
This day is critical for acclimatization. The trail passes Kibo junction, and climbers ascend to the dramatic Lava Tower (also called "Shark's Tooth") at 4,875m — your highest altitude yet. A rest here helps the body begin adapting. Continuing on to Arrow Glacier before descending to Barranco Hut below. The principle of "climb high, sleep low" is perfectly executed — you sleep at 3,960m after spending several hours at nearly 4,900m.
One of the most challenging and rewarding mornings of the trek. The Barranco Wall rises 257m above camp — a scramble requiring hands and feet over solid volcanic rock. Fixed ropes on the hardest moves. The view from the top is extraordinary. The trail then crosses several ridges and valleys before arriving at Karanga Camp. This is the day where the 7-day route diverges from the 6-day — instead of pushing on to Barafu today, we rest overnight at Karanga.
The short ascent to Barafu Base Camp completes the South Circuit, offering stunning views of Kibo and Mawenzi peaks from multiple angles. Barafu means "ice" in Swahili — the landscape is barren and otherworldly. Arrive by early afternoon, rest completely, eat a light dinner at 5pm, and aim for a few hours of sleep before the midnight alarm. This extra night at Karanga makes a real, measurable difference to how you feel tonight.
Very early in the morning (midnight to 2am), the climb begins between the Rebmann and Ratzel glaciers. The air is thin and cold. Every step demands determination and endurance. After 5–6 gruelling hours, Stella Point on the crater rim comes into view — and then, with the Antarctic wind softening in the dawn light, the walk to Uhuru Peak. You have reached the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the highest point on the African continent. Descend rapidly via scree to Barafu for rest and food, then continue to Mweka Camp in the upper rainforest.
A final walk through the beautiful montane rainforest — welcome back to the world of oxygen, colour, and warmth. At Mweka Village and Gate, sign out and receive your summit certificate. Transfer back to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha. A day off to recover, soak legs, reflect on an extraordinary achievement, and prepare for your onward journey — whether that's a safari, Zanzibar, or the flight home.
