Shira Route 8 Days
The Shira Route begins with a vehicle drive to the high plateau — saving your legs for the mountain's most spectacular upper sections. The result: maximum time on the Shira Plateau with superb views of the crater rim glaciers and excellent acclimatization.
The Glacier Route
The Shira Route shares its first day and much of its upper section with the Lemosho Route — both begin at Londorossi Gate and traverse the Shira Plateau. The key difference is that the Shira Route uses a vehicle to bypass the lower forest section, driving to Shira Gate (2,650m) before the trek begins.
This vehicle-assisted approach means climbers begin at a significantly higher altitude, which can accelerate altitude sickness in susceptible individuals. However, it also gives maximum time on the plateau and above — where the route's standout feature lies: dramatic views of the crater rim glaciers from the western approach. No other route offers the same perspective of Kilimanjaro's diminishing ice fields.
From Shira Camp 2, the route joins the Machame/Lemosho Southern Circuit via Lava Tower and Barranco, Karanga, and Barafu to the midnight summit push.
Day-by-Day Breakdown
Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) and transfer to your hotel in Arusha. Meet your lead guide for a pre-climb briefing covering the route, acclimatization strategy, packing list, and equipment. This is a good time to finalize any gear rentals (sleeping bag, trekking poles, gaiters) and rest before the climb begins. Optional: visit Arusha town, Maasai market, or Arusha National Park for a pre-climb wildlife warm-up.
Drive from Arusha to Londorossi Gate for registration, then continue by vehicle to Shira Gate (2,650m) — bypassing the lower rainforest section. From Shira Gate, begin hiking through the rainforest and into moorland. This vehicle-to-gate approach means arriving at altitude much faster than the Lemosho Route's two-day forest approach. Monitor altitude symptoms carefully. Arrive at Shira Camp 1 (3,505m) for the first night.
Trek across the wide open Shira Plateau through moorland and heather. The plateau is an ancient volcanic caldera — one of the largest in Africa — offering dramatic panoramic views. Stunning vistas of Kibo's glaciated summit cone ahead, and the valley below to the west. Stunning valley views and the first clear sights of the Western Breach and crater rim glaciers. Freezing temperatures below zero expected at night. Shira Camp 2 (3,840m) is set on the plateau's eastern edge.
Ascend to Lava Tower (4,630m) — the route's highest point before summit day. The acclimatization value is significant: sleeping at 3,950m after reaching 4,630m. The landscape becomes increasingly lunar and dramatic. Descend to the sheltered, green Barranco Camp directly beneath the imposing Great Barranco Wall. The contrast between the barren upper slopes and the lush vegetation around camp is striking. Clear evenings offer extraordinary views of the glacier-topped summit above.
Navigate the famous Barranco Wall — a challenging scramble requiring hands and feet, with fixed ropes on the most exposed sections. Non-technical but thrilling, with views across the entire southern face of Kilimanjaro from the top. Continue through alpine desert terrain via multiple ridge crossings to Karanga Camp. A shorter but physically demanding day that consolidates the acclimatization benefit of the previous days.
The final ascent to Barafu Base Camp through barren alpine desert. Arrive by early afternoon — the rest of the day is entirely about rest, rehydration, light eating, and mental preparation. The summit looms above. Eat an early dinner at 5pm, get into sleeping bag by 7pm. Summit alarm set for midnight. This is the eve of summit night — the moment the entire climb has been building toward.
Around midnight, begin the summit bid. Trek through steep switchbacks and scree slopes toward Stella Point (5,739m) on the crater rim. From Stella Point, continue around the crater rim to Uhuru Peak — the highest point on Kilimanjaro, and the highest point on the African continent. The Shira Route provides perfect views of the receding glaciers on the crater rim as you approach the summit. Descend via Mweka Trail to Mweka Camp for a well-earned overnight rest.
Final descent through lush rainforest to Mweka Gate. Collect your official summit certificate and sign the exit register. Transfer back to Arusha for your celebration dinner, hotel, and onward travel plans — whether that's a safari extension, Zanzibar, or your flight home.

Shira vs Lemosho: Which is better?
The Lemosho Route includes the beautiful forest approach on foot, giving a slower acclimatization profile. The Shira skips this by vehicle, slightly increasing early AMS risk. For maximum glacier views and Shira Plateau time with the best acclimatization, we suggest the Lemosho 8 Days.
