Northern Circuit 9 Days
The ultimate Kilimanjaro experience — the only route that circles the entire northern wilderness before the summit. Nine days of pristine wilderness, maximum acclimatization, and the highest summit success rate of any Kilimanjaro route.
The Complete Kilimanjaro
The Northern Circuit is Kilimanjaro's newest and longest route — and arguably its finest. While most routes cover only the southern and western flanks, the Northern Circuit circles the entire mountain, traversing the remote, wild northern slopes that almost no climbers ever see.
The acclimatization profile is the best on the mountain — nine days of gradual altitude gain, including multiple "sleep high, trek low" days, gives your body the maximum possible time to adapt. The result is statistically the highest summit success rate of any Kilimanjaro route. The route is also the quietest: the northern slopes between Moir Camp and Third Cave are used by fewer than 5% of all Kilimanjaro climbers.
If you can afford one extra day and Custom Quote the Northern Circuit over the Lemosho is the single best investment you can make in your Kilimanjaro experience.

Begin at Londorossi Gate on Kilimanjaro's remote northwest flank — the same starting point as the Lemosho Route. After registration, a 12-km vehicle transfer reaches the trailhead. A short initial trek through ancient rainforest where elephants, buffalo, and colobus monkeys may appear. This is a gentle beginning, designed to ease climbers into the mountain's lower ecosystem before the longer days ahead.
Transition from rainforest into low alpine moorland, ascending gradually onto the Shira Plateau. The vegetation changes markedly — heather gives way to open scrub, and the sky opens wide. This pace gives the body comfortable altitude adjustment. Shira Camp 1 at 3,610m is set at the plateau's western edge with views across the ancient caldera.
Cross the Shira Plateau — the vast, windswept ancient caldera — with stunning views of the valley below and the western breach above. The views of Kibo's summit are dramatic and close-feeling despite the altitude still to climb. Expect freezing temperatures below zero at night. A shorter day designed for gradual acclimatization on the plateau.
The longest day of the route. Head eastward through the "Garden of the Senecios" — extraordinary giant groundsel plants in a surreal high-altitude landscape — to Lava Tower (4,600m) near Shark's Tooth for lunch. This crucial acclimatization point gives the body exposure to near-base-camp altitude before descending to Moir Camp. The "sleep high, trek low" principle maximized here. From Moir Camp, the Northern Circuit diverges — other routes would descend to Barranco; this route continues north into wilderness.
Enter the Northern Circuit proper — from here to Third Cave, you will encounter almost no other climbers. A moderately steep climb from Moir Valley leads to expansive views of Kilimanjaro's vast uninhabited northern plains. An optional detour to Little Lent Hill (4,375m) offers an elevated perspective. The landscape is raw, remote, and extraordinarily beautiful — this is the mountain as very few people ever see it.
Continue east around the northern slopes via Buffalo Ridge, descending through Pofu Camp, then continuing eastward to join the Rongai Route at Third Cave. The shorter day continues the gentle acclimatization, allowing the body to rest and adapt. Views across Kenya's Amboseli plains appear on clear days — the sense of circling the mountain becomes tangible. Third Cave Camp sits on the mountain's northeastern flank.
A long, steady climb over the Saddle between Kibo and Mawenzi peaks, then southwest to School Hut at 4,800m — the highest camp on any Kilimanjaro route before summit night. The altitude here is significant; move slowly and deliberately. An early dinner is served before the midnight wake-up call. Seven days of patient acclimatization mean your body is well-prepared for what comes next. Summit departure around 11:30 PM with hot tea and biscuits.
Summit night — and after seven days of preparation, the body is as ready as it can be. Awoken around 11:30 PM with hot tea and biscuits, the climb begins in darkness. First checkpoint: Hans Meyer Cave (5,150m). Continue zigzagging steeply up to Gillman's Point (5,681m) on the crater rim — reached after 5–6 hours. Final push: 2 more hours across the crater rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) — the highest point in Africa. Descend via Barafu to Millennium Camp (3,950m). Total trekking time on summit day: 14–16 hours. The most demanding day — and the most rewarding moment of your life.
A final short walk through dense montane rainforest — the mountain's lowest ecological zone, welcoming you back with warmth, oxygen, and birdsong. Sign out with the authorities at Mweka Gate, where certificates are issued: green for Gillman's Point, gold for Uhuru Peak. It is customary to tip guides and porters here — they have worked extraordinarily hard over 9 days to get you to the top of Africa. Transfer back to Moshi or Arusha for the celebration you've earned.
