Rongai Route 6 Days
Kilimanjaro's only northern approach — quieter trails, drier conditions, and dramatic views across the Amboseli plains toward Kenya. A remote and scenic route via the jagged Mawenzi Tarn to Uhuru Peak.
Kilimanjaro from the North
The Rongai Route is the only trail that approaches Kilimanjaro from the north, beginning near the Kenyan border village of NaroMoru. This gives it a markedly different character to the southern routes — the landscape is drier, the crowds thinner, and the views across the flat Amboseli plains of Kenya are uniquely expansive.
The Rongai ascends at a gentler gradient than the Machame, passing the dramatic Mawenzi Tarn beneath Kilimanjaro's jagged second peak before crossing the lunar saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo to the summit hut. The summit is via the Marangu/Kibo Hut route — a steady 7-hour push via Hans Meyer Cave and Gillman's Point to Uhuru Peak.
This route is excellent for trekkers wanting fewer crowds and a unique northern perspective on the mountain, while still achieving summit with our experienced guide team.
Day-by-Day Breakdown
Begin near the Kenyan border village of NaroMoru on Kilimanjaro's northeastern flank. The trailhead is accessed via a 3-hour drive from Arusha or Moshi. A small winding path crosses maize fields before entering pine forest and then native woodland. A gentle gradient with manageable altitude gain. Simba Camp sits at the forest edge with clear views north toward Kenya — a very different perspective from the more visited southern flanks.
A longer day hiking toward Kibo with a lunch stop at First Caves (5.8 km). The terrain transitions from woodland to moorland, with expanding views of the mountain above and Kenya's flat Amboseli plains below. The route is quiet and peaceful — far fewer climbers than the Machame or Marangu routes. Kikelewa Camp at 3,679m is a spectacular setting with Mawenzi's jagged towers overhead.
A short but steep climb up grassy slopes leads to superb views of both Kibo and Mawenzi. The afternoon is reserved for acclimatization — short optional hikes above camp help your body adjust. Mawenzi Tarn Camp at 4,303m sits dramatically beneath the jagged towers of Mawenzi (5,149m), Kilimanjaro's second peak. The tarn (mountain lake) reflects the peaks at dawn — one of the most scenic camp locations on any Kilimanjaro route.
Cross the eerie Saddle — a high-altitude desert plateau between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. The landscape is completely barren and otherworldly — no vegetation, no water, just volcanic gravel under an immense sky. Kibo Hut at 4,730m is a stone block house that sleeps 60 climbers. The remainder of the afternoon is for rest. Summit attempt begins at 11:30 PM — sleep as much as possible.
Summit night begins at 11:30 PM with tea and biscuits. The path climbs steeply in darkness via Hans Meyer Cave (5,150m) and zigzags up loose scree, demanding every ounce of determination. Gillman's Point on the crater rim (5,681m) is reached after 5–6 hours — the summit certificate point. Snow typically covers the final stretch around the crater rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) — Africa's highest point. After photographs and celebration, descend the same way to Kibo Hut, then continue all the way to Horombo Hut — a very tough but exhilarating final long day.
The final descent via the Marangu Route, passing Mandara hut through moorland and back into rainforest. The trail is well-defined and increasingly forested. At Marangu Gate, receive your summit certificate — green for Gillman's Point or gold for Uhuru Peak. Transfer back to Arusha or Moshi. Note: the Rongai route exits via Marangu Gate, so vehicle pickup is arranged there.

Important note on Rongai
The Rongai 6-day has a higher altitude sickness risk than other routes due to the faster acclimatization profile. We recommend consulting your doctor about altitude medication and arriving in Arusha 1–2 days early to acclimatize at 1,400m before starting the climb.
