Machame Route 6 Days
The "Whiskey Route" — Kilimanjaro's most popular trail. A challenging and dramatic climb through four distinct ecological zones to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), featuring the iconic Barranco Wall scramble.
The Whiskey Route
The Machame Route — nicknamed the "Whiskey Route" for its reputation as the tougher alternative to the "Coca-Cola" Marangu — is Kilimanjaro's most popular trail, chosen by over a third of all climbers. And for good reason: it offers spectacular scenery, excellent acclimatization through the "walk high, sleep low" principle, and a genuine sense of adventure.
Beginning at Machame Gate (1,800m), the route climbs steeply through dense rainforest before crossing moorland, ascending to the Shira Plateau, passing beneath the Lava Tower, and navigating the dramatic Barranco Wall scramble. The 6-day option is physically demanding but very achievable for fit, acclimatization-aware climbers.
Consider upgrading to the 7-day Machame for an extra acclimatization day, which meaningfully improves summit success rates.
Day-by-Day Breakdown
The drive from Arusha or Moshi to Machame Gate takes about one hour. After registration and a final gear check, the trail plunges into magnificent, dense rainforest — mossy, muddy in places, and dramatically alive. Gaiters and trekking poles are strongly recommended from day one. The forest is home to colobus monkeys, various birds, and occasional Cape buffalo. A steady climb through the canopy leads to Machame Camp, set in a clearing at the forest edge.
The landscape transforms significantly as the route leaves the forest behind and traverses the southwest flank through heather and moorland. Giant groundsel and lobelia plants appear — strange, ancient forms adapted to extreme altitude. The Shira Plateau opens ahead, with distant views of Kibo's summit cone. The "walk high, sleep low" acclimatization principle is applied: the route passes beneath the Lava Tower, ascending higher than the camp before dropping to the Shira campsite.
A longer day despite the short net distance, due to the major acclimatization ascent to the Shira Plateau and Lava Tower (4,600m). The route ascends through increasingly sparse vegetation past Kibo junction, rewarding with wide views of Mount Meru in the distance. After an acclimatizing rest at the dramatic Lava Tower rock formation, the trail descends to the lush, sheltered Barranco Camp below the Great Barranco Wall — with its iconic silhouette visible above camp all evening.
The morning begins with the legendary Barranco Wall — a steep scramble requiring hands and feet, with fixed ropes on the hardest sections. It is non-technical but thrilling. After conquering the wall, the route traverses rocky ridges to Karanga Camp for lunch, then continues up desolate scree slopes to Barafu — the summit base camp at 4,640m. An early dinner is served at 5pm. Bed by 7pm. Summit alarm at midnight.
The long summit night. Around midnight, after a wake-up of hot tea and biscuits, the ascent begins in total darkness, heads down, following the beam of headtorches. Steep scree zigzags for 4–5 exhausting hours. Stella Point (5,756m) appears on the crater rim — here the gradient relents and the final glaciers come into view. Sunrise, if timed right, bathes everything in extraordinary gold light. Uhuru Peak (5,895m) — Africa's highest point — is another hour across the crater rim. Descend via scree back to Barafu for breakfast, then continue down through the forest to Mweka Camp.
A gentle final descent through lush rainforest. Every step downward brings warmer air and increasing oxygen — legs feel heavy but the hardest part is behind you. At Mweka Gate, sign the register and collect your official summit certificate (gold for Uhuru Peak, green for Stella Point). Transfer back to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha for a hot shower, cold beer, and a celebration dinner.
