Mahale Mountains
Africa's most remote national park — crystalline waters of Lake Tanganyika, tropical rainforest rising to 2,462 m, and the continent's finest chimpanzee trekking.
Africa's Best Chimp Trekking
Mahale Mountains National Park sits on the eastern shore of Lake Tanganyika — the world's longest freshwater lake — in one of the most remote and pristine corners of Tanzania. There are no roads in or out: access is by small charter plane followed by a short boat ride through crystal-clear water.
The park protects one of the world's largest remaining chimpanzee populations. The M-group — a habituated community of over 60 individuals — can be observed at close range during daily treks through the forest. Watching chimps groom, play, and socialise just metres away is profoundly moving.
After a morning chimp trek, you can swim, snorkel, or kayak in the crystal waters of Lake Tanganyika — the only place in the world where you can do all three in the same destination.
