Africa's Most Iconic Wilderness

The Serengeti is arguably the greatest wildlife sanctuary on Earth. Its name comes from the Maasai word Siringet — "the land that goes on forever" — and standing on its open plains at dawn, you understand why. The landscape stretches to every horizon with an animal density found nowhere else.

The park is most famous for the Great Migration — the annual circular movement of over 1.5 million wildebeest, 500,000 zebra, and 200,000 gazelle, following the rains around a 1,200 km circuit. The dramatic Mara River crossings (July–October), where crocodiles ambush the herds, are one of the most photographed wildlife events in the world.

But the Serengeti is spectacular year-round. January to February brings the calving season in the southern Ndutu area — arguably even more dramatic than the river crossings, as thousands of wildebeest calves are born daily, drawing every predator in the ecosystem.
