Ruaha National Park
Tanzania's largest national park — an untamed wilderness with the highest density of lions in Africa, massive elephant herds, and a raw, remote authenticity that the north cannot match.
Africa's Last True Wilderness
Ruaha National Park is Tanzania's largest and one of Africa's most breathtaking wilderness areas. Together with the Rungwa Game Reserve and surrounding protected lands, it forms the greater Ruaha ecosystem — one of the most important lion conservation areas on the continent.
The park's remote location (a 1-hour flight from Dar es Salaam, or an 8-hour drive) keeps visitor numbers low — meaning you'll often have a sighting entirely to yourself. The wildlife density in the dry season, when the Great Ruaha River is the only water source, rivals anything in East Africa.
Ruaha also supports one of the largest populations of African wild dog — arguably the continent's most endangered large predator. Sightings at dawn hunts are among the most electrifying experiences Tanzania offers.
