Lake Manyara
Famous for its tree-climbing lions, vast flamingo flocks, and the dramatic Great Rift Valley escarpment that frames every view in this compact, diverse park.
Where Lions Climb Trees
Lake Manyara National Park packs astonishing biodiversity into a relatively compact area. The park descends from the Rift Valley escarpment wall down through forest, woodland, and open floodplain to the alkaline waters of Lake Manyara itself.
The park's most famous residents are its tree-climbing lions — an unusual behaviour seen here and at Queen Elizabeth NP in Uganda. Seeing a pride of lions draped across acacia branches is one of Tanzania's truly unique wildlife moments.
Ernest Hemingway called it "the loveliest lake I have ever seen." During the rainy season, the lake's shoreline turns pink with tens of thousands of lesser flamingos, while hippos wallow in the papyrus-lined shallows and elephants push through groundwater forest at the escarpment base.
